The Battleship Arizona Sunk and Aflame

Of all of the pictures of World War II, this and the flag raising on Iwo Jima are probably the most memorable to those Americans who experienced the events through newspapers and magazines.

This view is off of the Arizona's port bow. The destruction of supporting structure has caused the tipping of the tripod mast that holds the gun director's and sighting equipment. The base of one of these tripod supports is now the foundation for the memorials flagpole.
